Listening to people in Selhurst
That’s why I hold regular Saturday morning meetings across the constituency. This week we booked a hall in Selhurst and invited local residents to come along and take part in a discussion about how we can improve life for people in the area.
Many of the concerns raised stemmed from the failure of Croydon Council to get the basics right. Local streets are filthy, despite the fact that Croydon’s Conservatives charge a high level of council tax and hiked it up again this year – they even turned down funding on offer from the Government to freeze it. I was joined by hard-working local Labour councillors Toni Letts and Gerry Ryan.
The top issues people raised included fears over police cuts that will see every police station in Croydon North closed down, anger over threats to Croydon University Hospital’s A&E and maternity units, and concerns about crime and anti-social behaviour in the area.
