Fun and games at the Waterside Centre

Steve Reed MP spent Sunday afternoon at the Community Games Day at South Norwood Lake.

The event was run by the Upper Norwood Association for Community Care (UNACC), a local charity that runs a drop-in day care centre and lunch club for up to 50 older people.  Based at the historic Waterside Centre overlooking the lake, the Association’s services include trips to the seaside or theatre, befriending, carer support and shopping.  As well as regular home-cooked lunches, the Association offers older people the chance to socialise with friends – so vital in making sure that older people aren’t left isolated at home.

The Community Games Day was a roaring success despite the disappointment of rain during the afternoon.  Guests were entertained by a Korean church choir, a raffle, a bric-a-brac sale and a well-stocked cake stall with the delicious treats provided by larger-than-life chef Mark.

Speaking after the event, Steve said:  “I’ve had a great afternoon with the lovely people at UNACC.  They are one of the organisations that bring our community together in Croydon North.  Like many voluntary organisations they have been hit by funding cuts as the Government’s austerity policy bites, but they really make every penny count in improving life for older people in our area.  I look forward to giving them my support in the years to come.”
