Labour’s plan to save our NHS
Croydon North MP Steve Reed has backed Labour’s plans to introduce a £2.5 billion-a-year NHS Time to Care Fund to save the health service after years of Tory neglect.
Labour’s plan will see 20,000 more nurses, 8,000 more GPs, 5,000 more care workers and 3,000 more midwives. By appointing additional staff, doctors and nurses will have the time they need to care properly for patients, as well as transforming healthcare in communities and at home.
The ambitious plan will be paid for by a range of measures including a co-ordinated crackdown on tax avoidance and by ensuring tobacco companies contribute towards the costs they impose on the NHS.
Speaking after Ed Miliband’s announcement, Steve said:
“One of the issues that local people regularly raise with me is the time it takes to see a GP. Our fantastic nurses and doctors know better than anyone the pressure our NHS is under and we need to do more to support them.
The NHS is one of country’s our greatest achievements but it’s struggling under a Tory-led government which wasted billions on an unnecessary top-down reorganisation. Instead, Labour has a bold plan to provide more care services closer to home and make sure care visits last longer than the 15 minutes people get now.
The NHS is going backwards under the Tories, so there has never been a better or more important time to care about its future. Only Labour can be trusted to protect the NHS and with the Time to Care Fund we’ll ensure we have a health service fit for the 21st century.”
