Steve has dealt with over 120,000 individual cases for local residents who asked in Helping residents - one of the highest levels for any MP.

Steve is the first Labour MP to pass a major Act of Parliament from opposition in 22 years, protecting mental health patients from violent restraint of the kind that killed 21-year-old South Norwood graduate Seni Lewis.

Steve has held senior positions on Labour’s front bench - he’s currently Shadow Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. Previously, he has been Labour’s spokesperson for Communities and Local Government; Justice; Children and Families; Civil Society; and Crime Prevention.

Steve led the successful campaign to save Croydon University Hospital from closure, and secured £20 million investment in a new A&E.

Steve pioneered a new approach to tackling crime at source, successfully cutting violent youth crime in Lambeth by a third in just 18 months.

Steve was the first MP in the country to get flammable, Grenfell-style cladding stripped from a local housing block, and brought thousands of new affordable homes to Lambeth before becoming an MP.

Steve led the transformation of Lambeth’s services for vulnerable children from worst-rated to best-rated in the country before becoming an MP.

Steve helped set up Repowering - now the UK’s biggest community owned sustainable energy company - and has called for Croydon Council to set up its own clean energy cooperative

Steve Reed is the Labour MP for Streatham and Croydon North. He was first elected in a by-election in 2012 having previously served as leader of Lambeth council from 2006-12. He was the Secretary of State for Food, Rural Affairs and Environment following Labour’s election victory in 2024. In September 2025, he was appointed the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government.
