Children

Steve served on Labour’s front bench as Shadow Minister for Children and Families and has one of the best records in the country for protecting vulnerable children.

Steve has one of the best track records in the country for protecting vulnerable children. When he was Labour’s Shadow Minister for Children and Families, he called for better support for vulnerable children after years of Conservative cuts.

When Steve won back Lambeth Council from the Conservatives and Lib Dems, the council’s services for vulnerable children were rated among the worst in the country. Under Steve’s leadership, those services rapidly improved to become best-rated in the country – judged ‘outstanding’ in every single category.

As an MP, Steve has worked hard to improve conditions for Croydon’s child refugees. Croydon has more children seeking asylum than any other borough, and Steve has repeatedly called on the Government to improve support for them. He brought a group of 40 child refugees to Parliament to make their voices heard.

During his time as an elected representative, Steve has helped set up seven schools. He brought in six new schools in Lambeth, and helped get a new school built in Thornton Heath after the Conservatives left children to learn in portable cabins for six years.
